I am Shayla Dawson-Tate, and I LOVE MATH! My love for math stems from my analytical personality, and of course my favorite high school math teacher, Mrs. Emily Thompson. She had a great knack for breaking math objectives into bite-size pieces so that my classmates and I could understand how to evaluate, interpret, and solve those Algebra 2 and trigonometry problems. With that being said, I was able to gain confidence and conquer math! Fast forward 20 years later, and I find myself doing the same.
I have been teaching since 2006. I currently hold teaching certifications in elementary education, business management, entreprenuership, economics, mild/moderate special education, and career pathway. Prior to becoming an educator, I obtained a bachelor’s in business administration from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2002. In 2009, I graduated from William Carey College (now William Carey University) with a master’s in education. My 11 years of experience in education and my, what seems to be uncommon, love of math has allowed me to be equipped to tutor students who hold the opposite view as I do concerning math.
About 7 years ago, I was invited to tutor students enrolled in an after school program and a summer tutoring program. I truly enjoyed the small group and one on one atmosphere of tutoring. In January of this year, with the help of social media, I have been able to build a clientele of about 10. I have tutored elementary math to algebra to intermediate college algebra to ACT MATH to Praxis math. My youngest client is 6, and my oldest client, 48. I thoroughly enjoy helping others build their confidence in math. I have had parents to express their appreciation to and for me for helping their child pass when failure of grade and/or class seemed to have been an option. This summer, I have hosted 2 Math camps, an ACT MATH CAMP, and a Praxis Math Camp for aspiring teachers. I look forward to helping many more build their confidence in math which will lead them to conquering their fear of math.
